Roy Wood Off The Record Video tape about recording different types of music AM/FMreview by Nigel Parker. Roy Wood ! what can you say that hasn't already been said about the man ? For people to young to remember, Roy Wood was the GENIOUS behind "The Move, E.L.O and Wizzard" to name but a few. Roy gives us a "backstage" look at recording a record from start to end covering, mixing, EQ, computrs, samplers and etc. The only thing about the tape for me was that it felt a little rushed and not long enough; skimming various areas where more time needed to be spent. The tape starts with Roy in his what looks like a garage! Its the best home setup I've seen! He gives us a brief show off of his mixing desk 24 track tape machine, and row of samplers. Then sets about showing how a songs built up first by STRIPING a tape with time-code andding sampled drums, a bass and a little guitar. Then its OFF TO A REAL STUDIO with an engineer to re-record the drums with real drums or "bongo bashing" as he calls it, showing various miking tips and tips the boring old HOW TO MAKE A POP SHIELD OUT OF A COATHANGER AND A PAIR OF TIGHTS just in case you didn't already know. The vocals are added and BACKING singers are realy Roy ovredubbing. ( no expense is used what so ever ha ) and finally the mixing. This is a good tape for an introduction though in 51 minutes it could have gone into greater depth about subjects, if the funny flash titles are cut between each section then extra time could have been spent on things like Fx which were skimmed over very fast, Roys humor makes up for the shortfalls of the video which would suit a beginner looking for information.
